Chapter 2... Santa Cruz dude.
I got into town and felt like I was home. The chill vibe. The funky shops. The people. All of it makes it very challenging for a guy driving a flower bus to leave. (I had pre-planned mural gig in Santa Barbra to be at in only 8 days when I drove through Santa Cruz) The plan was to spent the week hanging out on the beach and if I happened to see a space to paint, so be it. But priority one was to live the beach bum life for a week. And that’s what I did… for 3 days. I walked around town asking if anybody was interested in a flower mural but accepted that it wasn’t going to happen, and that was perfectly fine.
On the morning of day four I was on my way to hang out on the beach when I stopped into a little surf shop. They were having a tent sale. I couldn’t help but notice the entire side of the building was a freshly painted white cement wall, the perfect canvas. I spoke to the owner, Bud and while he was a little skeptical at first, once he saw our other work, he gave the green light. Not on the cement wall, but on the storage trailer that was parked in front of it.
This thing had seen better days, and with only four days before I had to leave town, it was going to be a tight turnaround. So, we got to work fast, pulling up the shrubbery around the base, power washing the surface and sealing it with a coat of white primer.
As I was doing that, Bud and his wife were spreading the word on social media, getting as many people as possible to come out on a Tuesday afternoon to help fill in the flowers.
Less than 48 hours after meeting, we had the trailer fully prepped and ready for painters. It was a beautiful day for painting. Over the course of the afternoon we had around 50 people come through to lend a hand. The next two days were spent cleaning up the flowers and outline the design.
After that I hit road for LAX to pick up a special guest!
